Holding Out For A Hero.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
While the bulk of the focus of issue #5 of Superboy by Jeff Lemire and Pier Gallo is the Superboy vs. Kid Flash race, the story opens with Smallville resident Lori Luthor, who spends the time she's not in school caring for her invalid mother, Lex Luthor's sister, and, apparently, awaiting each night the arrival of someone from the skies to take her away from her tedious life. (We may assume she's waiting for Superboy, but she never actually states his name.)

The race goes pretty much as expected, with the participants taking some detours to perform rescues or apprehensions, since they are, after all, super-heroes. They also want to drag out the exhibition a bit, as they realize that a true superspeed race wouldn't satisfy the public's desire to witness an event. However, when they near the finish in Smallville, Conner(Superboy)Kent sees the Phantom Stranger outside Lori's house:

The race must go on, though, so:

Now, seriously, would I give away the winner here? Of course not! The book ends where it began, with Lori coming home after the race, and, after seeing to her mother:

Again, we assume it's Superboy she's disappointed in, but it's not entirely clear.

So what's on Lori's property? Is IT the reason that Phantom Stranger was there? Or Lori herself? Or her mother? Plus, Conner still has Psionic Lad, with possible evil intent, as a house guest, and there is the big mystery of the 'broken silo' in Smallville. To be continued, indeed.

Kevin Keller Back In Riverdale!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Archie Comics' first gay character, Kevin Keller, returned to Riverdale in Veronica #205! The basic plot, as with most Archie comics, is laid out on the cover, with Kevin and Veronica's budding friendship causing some jealousy between Veronica and Betty. Misunderstandings ensue, and all is tied up nicely at the end, with a reveal as to why Kev and Ronnie were spending so much time together. What's cool about the issue is that Kevin's sexual orientation wasn't the only reason for his use, while it wasn't avoided either, as it was used for comedic value in his first meeting with Mr. Lodge, Veronica's father:

Kevin joins the regular cast of characters in getting his own 'looks' in the monthly fashion pages as well:

Though Kevin is scheduled for his own miniseries, which will take place in his neighborhood and present his own supporting cast, he fits in well in Riverdale, so here's hoping that more of the comics make use him as a guest.
