Adventure Comics' Legion Academy!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
The amazing artwork of Phil Jimenez brings the Legion Academy to life in Adventure Comics beginning with this month's issue (after a teaser back-up last month). Mr. Jiminez does double duty as he co-writes the feature with longtime scripter Paul Levitz.

The Legion began as a story in the old Superboy comics of the Silver Age, when the stories were being told of a young Clark Kent's teenage forays into super-heroing, and he was visited by three super teens from the future. The three turned into many, as the Legion of Super-Heroes' tales were told on and off for more than 50 years, including at least two reboots of the concept.

Currently, the original team is back and operating in the 31st century in their own book, while the Adventure Comics title is providing a fresh look at the Legion Academy concept, introduced back in the late sixties (long before Avengers Academy), wherein some of the Legion's minor players instruct new potential recruits or just those looking to hone their powers, and we readers get to meet some new characters.

The Joke's On Superboy!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
This month's Young Justice #1 continues to center around Superboy's assimilation into the world outside of Cadmus, where the young Superman clone had been discovered by the newly formed team in the pilot episode of the Cartoon Network series. As a companion comic this series tries to fit into the cartoon's timeline, as last issue was to have occurred during a break in the pilot episode where the JLA team was making a decision as to the future of the YJ kids. Here, as in the toon, the boys are then introduced to their JLA-sanctioned new member, and first female, Martian Manhunter's protege, Miss Martian:

Turns out that Superboy (no other name in the Tooniverse)and Miss M are going to be staying in the cavern headquarters, as they don't have secret identities to go 'home' to. As with last issue's closet encounter, Superboy's Cadmus pod upbringing is reflected in his choice of rooms:

When Miss M is called away, and Superboy thinks he's alone, there appears to be a an intruder:

Soon it's apparent that the 'intruder' cannot hear Superboy, who is concerned that the place is haunted. The intruder's monologue reveals himself to be Snapper Carr, who, as longtime JLA readers know, was the 'mascot' of the JLA for many years before betraying them to the Joker, who proceeds to show himself after a cowardly attack on Superboy:

Superboy's actual meeting with the Joker will have to wait until issue 2, which means that the comics issues will not necessarily be timed to occur between episodes of the cartoon, which happens to air tonight at 7 p.m.

Alpha Flight Maxi-Series Announced!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
I'll admit that, after being relatively excited about the Alpha Flight one-shot during Marvel's Chaos War 'event', that the issue itself just didn't do it for me. What it DID manage, though, was to leave the previously-deceased members of the team in the 'land of the living' at the end of the issue, which explains why they're stil around for the just announce maxi-series,to tie into the "Fear Itself" event, written by Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente and drawn by Dale Eaglesham, beginning in June! Maybe it's my comfort with this particular team of creators, or else the intriguing tidbit that they'll be ignoring much of what the team was saddled with post-Byrne, or just the maxi-series format, which will allow more room to get it right. Personally, I always thought that Byrne had set it up for schizophrenic Aurora to have been cured due to her trip through Shaman's magic pouch right before John Byrne turned over the writing chores. How cool would it be to have a sane Aurora? Sadly, Northstar's Uncanny X-Men-introduced boyfriend Kyle has been mentioned, so his domestication continues.

Aquawar Ends!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Brightest Day #20 continues from the previous issue's 'Aquawar' with the timely arrival of Mera and Aquagirl, who join Aquaman and Aqualad in opposing Black Manta, Aqualad's biological father and the killer of Aquaman and Mera's son, and Siren, Mera's evil sister and commander of the extra-dimensional army from Xebel!

Though too late to save Aquaman's hand (chopped off last issue, not for the first time in the character's history), Mera uses her control over the seas to save the beaches and the airbreathers. Aquaman follows up by calling forth a creepy army of dead sea life, as has been his wont since returning from the dead at the beginning of the series. To put an end to the 'war', however, Aqualad's ability to seal off Xebel is called upon:

Both Black Manta and Siren make the customary boastful threats as they are sent away:
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
and all's well that ends well, as Aquaman and Mera reconcile, and Aqualad and Aquagirl address their status:
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Aquaman is then consumed by white light from the White Lantern and disappears, no doubt to make his reappearance in the finale of Brightest Day in a few months, along with the rest of the resurrectees whom this has also happened to. Mera should find him by then, and perhaps be joined by the junior Aquas, though they have both been seen in Teen Titans previews.
