Made it through Halloween, but the true "Night of the Living Dead" doesn't occur till Tuesday, Election Day! At least in Atlanta we are not being presented with cryogenically-preserved replacement candidates like Walter Mondale in Minnesota! However our candidates are scary all on their own! Too bad no one's running on a platform promoting corporal punishment, because each of these people could do with a serious ass-whipping! As a naturalized citizen, I realize what a privilege it is to cast a vote in this country, but it seems that I am all too often voting against someone or choosing the lesser of two evils.
On a brighter note, I have discovered that I am really enjoying Joss Whedon's "Firefly"! Excellent blend of adventure, sci fi,classic Western, and humor on Friday nights on Fox! Unfortunately "Birds of Prey" has gone steadily downhill since the first episode.Though this week promises a guest appearance by the comics' Black Canary, she will no doubt be mishandled as are the rest of the cast. The "Smallville" episode "Red" pushed all sorts of envelopes and got me interested in that series again, but things are back to (Yawn)normal."Angel" and "Buffy" are reliably cool, but word is that "Buffy"'s headed toward its conclusion. My truly guilty pleasure is "Survivor",since this season's cast appears to be wearing thin on host Jeff Probst! I'm waiting for him to trip one of them during a challenge. Were I the wagering type,I would bet on my namesake Ken,the NYPD guy, to win. He's either really cool or really clueless, and at this point in the game it is hard to tell which."Survivor" used to be what I watched until "CSI" came on,but with every other show doing the same forensics thing,I find myself getting bored with the schtick. And does anybody else watch "Law & Order" and try to figure out which real-life event they are ripping off when they do their "ripped from the headlines" stuff?
The snipers who were terrorizing the Maryland area turned out to be much more interesting than the TV dramas this Fall anyway.Apparently "profiling" is just another way to say "guessing",and boy were the media wrong about everything! All things considered it wrapped up pretty neatly. But there are quite a few questions about where the funding came from for all the travel, where Malvo's mother is,etc.Probably the most amazing thing to me was that last week a boatload of Haitian refugees landed in South Florida and all the media addressed was why Cubans and Haitians are treated differently! Let's see:there's a sniper who is here illegally from Jamaica, for a little while we were concerned that our borders were unsafe, and now we are worried that we are not letting enough people in illegally? Logic anybody? Apparently it was also felt that the refugees should wander about freely until they could have a hearing about being admitted to the U.S. The people who would be expected to show up for court were the same ones who respected our laws enough that they jumped into the back of a passing pick-up truck in order to escape the INS! Sure, they'll show for court;they were probably just hitching a ride to get to a clothing store in order to pick up a suit!
So Jeb Bush was questioned as to the unequal treatment of Haitians vs. Cubans, and if he had answered "Everyone deserves equal treatment;from now on no one gets in illegally!" I would have moved back to Florida to vote for him! Unfortunately,he wimped out,so I am staying in Atlanta!
Another place I could move back to would be Minnesota, but that would only be to vote for Jesse Ventura! Having walked out of Paul Wellstone's Memor-rally,an ex pro-wrestler showed more class than all the Democrats or Republicans this campaign season! Shame he isn't running for anything.
My one-time favorite radio guy,Art Bell,is retiring! The end of an era, though I can't honestly recall the last time he actually showed up on the show that bore his name! It was kinda fun guessing what excuse would be given for his absence, but the replacement announcers just aren't even interesting enough to check it out anymore.Actually listened to FM music radio the other day,and really dug the new Santana single.Couldn't quite place the female singer's voice, and have since discovered that it is the ubiquitous Michelle Branch! It proves that Carlos Santana can make anything palatable, but I still felt dirty.
As someone once said (probably a Floridian):Vote early and vote often!
